Making Oars for my Vivacity 650
Paul Gyurgyak wrote an article on making oars for his Vivacity 650 - http://www.neil.fuller.dsl.pipex.com/v650/articles/rowrow.pdf
This is also available from the Vivacity owners' club web site - http://www.vivacity650.co.uk/
This prompted me to make my own oars.
These were made from 'scrap' material which I salvaged to make the two oars in the following pictures. The oars are 10 ft long/3m. The wood is 2"x2", the paddle part is about 36"/900mm. The gluing took 24 hours prior to shaping and that took about a day of solid work using an angle grinder and coarse disks (30 grit) to remove as much material as possible, working down to 150 grit with a Dual action sander to smooth it all out.
Now I have to go down to the boat to try them out. The staining is antique pine from Ronseal.
The last 4 pictures show the oars finished, from different angles to highlight how BIG they are!
Pictures say a lot more than my words!
